Web Application Development

A web application is really an internet based program that uses web technology to present its results.
In other words, it's a website that DOES something!

What can a web application do?

Pretty much anything that requires two or more people in different locations to cooperate and share information...  Salesmen entering quotation or order details for office response, sports clubs entering match results to generate league tables.  Go on - use your imagination!

How does it work?

The server that hosts your website is a computer like any other and can store data and run programs.  The difference is that a web server is always connected to the internet so a web application running on it can be used anywhere in the world.  If your colleague in Timbuctoo logs in and enters... say a news story or a football result, you can see it, and perhaps edit it, in your office or home.

Give me an example...

Here's a simple one... Let's say a rambling club orgainises a walk every Sunday and publishes a list of walks for the next 6 months.  This can be stored in a database on the web server and a small web app. looks up the next weekend's walk and displays it on the home page of the club's website.  It will change every week without any manual intervention.  All that's needed is a new list every 6 months.

And if a club member wants to organise a mid-week walk he can enter details into the web app. and that will appear on the website too.

Another...

You offer an online training course and a web app. emails new course notes to your students every week and tracks their progress.  You also use the web app. each week to mark their work and clear them to the next section.
